Baltimore Rebellion (4/29/15)
An African-American male born in 2001 had a 32% chance of going to jail during his lifetime, compared with 17% of Latino males, and 6% of whites. In 2009, two-thirds of life sentences were given to non-whites. African-Americans are 33% more likely than whites to be detained while facing a criminal trial. And in New York City, 80% of people stopped by police are black or Latino, and 85% of those stopped are searched, compared with 8% of whites.
Against this backdrop, people took to the streets in what is known as Baltimore Rebellion when Baltimore cops arrested Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old Black resident who died after a week of police brutality.
